The Liebster Award

I am extremely pleased and honored to announce that The Ripple’s Edge has been presented the Liebster Award by The Haunted Lullaby!  I wish to thank The Haunted Lullaby for the nomination and I encourage you to visit and take a look!  It is a fantastic blog of poetry, thoughts, and provides unique perspectives on a variety of subjects.

When I first started posting, I never imagined that my blog would be presented with an award.  It has been an incredibly rewarding six months of writing, reading, and interacting with all of you and I look forward to what the future holds!

There are several stipulations for accepting the award, including answering a series of questions which I have posted below:

1. Why did you start blogging?
I have been a writer ever since I was very little, I actually started writing a story in fifth grade and I had a few of my friends read and critique it!  I still have their reviews in an old journal somewhere, so I guess that is when I first began being interested in sharing my work with others.  There was, of course, a period where I was incredibly shy about what I wrote and I wouldn’t show anyone.  In the past year I began sharing some of my poetry on my Facebook page and I received a lot of encouragement from my friends about my writing.  It gave me a little boost of confidence in my little pieces I considered poetic ramblings.  Then, at the beginning of this year, I met someone who had blogging experience who showed me how it worked, gave me a few tips, and encouraged me to take a leap of faith and give it a try.  The rest is history…

2. What inspired or influence you to write initially?
I have always been a voracious reader and have loved language ever since I can remember.  I will say that I was very encouraged to write more often than just for school assignments when one of my little stories was chosen to be ‘published’ in fourth grade.  I was given computer paper (a special privilege) to write and illustrate my tale.  It was then ‘bound’ between two pieces of cardboard covered in contact paper, published, and made available for the whole class to read.

3. Why did you choose the name of your blog?
Like many of my pieces of writing it came to me in a dream.  Honestly, I wasn’t sure when I would start a blog but I woke up one morning with the name, ‘The Ripple’s Edge’ AND a tag line, ‘Where words make waves.’ I bounded out of bed, frantically searched to see if anyone else had already used the name, and when I discovered it was unused I signed up, wrote a post, and then got ready for work.

4. What do you want to achieve with your blog?
I want to use my blog as a way to express myself and share my creative efforts with others.  I want to meet other people with the same interests and through the interactions available through this platform grow and develop as a writer and artist.  It would be wonderful if this blog somehow provided some unexpected opportunities to me!  I have secretly always wanted to have something published in print, but I think I have a ways to go before that might happen.

5. What is your greatest achievement?
Hopefully I haven’t yet reached my greatest achievement.  As of right now however, I would say my greatest achievement would probably be that I was able to complete my Master’s degree in just under a year while holding a job.  My greatest artistic achievement would be that I have received both a Best Actress and a Best Supporting Actress award from the Virginia Theatre Association.  I am very proud of those awards.

6. What has been your biggest challenge?
In life my biggest challenge has probably been to open up and talk to and meet new people.  I am quite the introvert.  It takes a great effort on my part to meet new people because even though I adore language, I often forget basic words when put into new social situations.  I’m not very good at making small talk either.  It’s something I’ve recognized and have been working on, like anything in life it will just take some practice.

7. What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is that I will not be able to overcome some of my shortcomings, step outside of my very defined comfort zone, and that it will negatively impact my ability to fulfill my dreams.

8. What is your dream?
I have many dreams so it is hard to choose only one.  I’ll choose the one that most closely relates to this blog.  I hope to someday find my work in print, in a book on a library shelf.

9. How do you want to be remembered by people?
I’d like to be remembered as someone who was always friendly and kind, someone who provided a positive and uplifting influence and was able to put a smile on your face.  I want to be remembered as caring, compassionate, and generous.  I’d want people to say I was persistent and determined in fighting for the things I believed were important.
I would also like to be remembered as being funny, but since I’ve inherited my Dad’s sense of humor I will most likely be remembered as someone who always tried to be funny and make others laugh.

10. What did you want to be when you grew up?
The easier question to answer would be what didn’t I want to be when I grew up.  I considered being a vet, teacher, singer, actress, writer, restaurant owner, zoologist, librarian, lawyer, musician, journalist, TV broadcaster….

11. What is your favorite post on your blog and why? (Be sure to link to it so we can check it out!)
The hardest questions for me to answer are those that ask me to pick a favorite.  I’m going to choose ‘Castles in the Trees’ because it always helps to give me a bit of perspective.  Sometimes I can get so caught up in life’s busy pace that I can lose perspective and feel a little lost.  Whenever I slow down, reflect, and think about the younger version of myself I can usually regroup, refocus, and feel better overall.

*Please provide 11 facts about yourself*

1.  Although I took violin lessons for five years and held first chair in my school’s orchestra I can not read music.  I play everything by ear.
2.  I have four pets, including two cats and two rabbits.
3.  I love learning languages.  I took eight years of Spanish, but have no one to practice speaking with.  I’m afraid I’m going to lose what I’ve learned!
4.  I have never been outside of the United States, but I have seen nearly every state.
5.  I am very interested in genealogy.  One record I found states that I am related to Thomas Jefferson through his grandmother’s sibling.
6.  I have only ever been to one concert.  It was a show by Teddy Geiger.
7.  I was asked to come up onstage and dance part of a number in a show in Atlantic City.  Afterward a random stranger came up and danced with me near a water fountain outside the theatre.  It was a very cool moment.
8.  I do not like staying in hotels.
9.  Single solitary pieces of hair on a bar of soap give me shivers and I can’t touch the soap until the hair is removed.
10.  I am almost always cold and have a sweater with me nearly always.
11.  I am always discovering there is so much I do not know.  It keeps me humble.
